The New Mexico Public Education Commission awarded Alma d’Arte Charter High School in Las Cruces with the Outstanding Achievement in Innovation during their May 16th meeting.

Commissioner Pattie Gipson announced the award and highlighted Alma d’Artre’s ability to connect students with art and different cultures. “They lead community wide programs like the Spanish market, mariachi conferences and jazz festival,” Gipson stated.

This is the first year that the commission has handed out awards for innovation, school turn-around, Board of the Year and financial oversight. Commissioner Steven Carrillo expressed his pleasure with the new awards saying, “We needed to recognize those schools, boards, and others that are doing really outstanding work so that is what we are doing here.”

Alma d’Arte High School is a charter school founded by Irene Oliver Lewis in 2004. It  focuses on integrating arts into traditional academic areas by teaching skills like digital media, culinary, dance, writing and visual art.

The award will be officially given at the June Charter School Conference in Albuquerque.
