There is something special about the Fourth of July.
Maybe it's the freedom we celebrate. Maybe it's the memories. Or maybe it's the simple traditions that return every year like old friends.
'As the summer sun stretches across the afternoon sky, neighborhoods begin to come alive. Flags wave from porches, coolers are filled with ice, and families prepare for a day of celebration.
Children run through sprinklers. Lawn chairs appear in driveways and backyards. Conversations grow louder. Laughter carries across fences.
The day begins to gather momentum. As the afternoon unfolds, anticipation fills the air. The grill is hot, burgers sizzle over glowing coals, and hot dogs slowly roast over the flames. Thin ribbons of smoke drift across the neighborhood, carrying the scent of summer. Coolers overflow with ice and cold drinks, watermelon waits to be sliced, and the excitement of the evening grows with every passing hour.
Some families celebrate close to home, gathered around backyard grills and picnic tables. Others make their way to city parks and community festivals, where bands play on outdoor stages and families spread blankets across the grass. Children run through open fields while friends and neighbors gather beneath the summer sky.
No matter where we celebrate, we are all sharing the same tradition.
As evening approaches, the golden light of day begins to soften. The excitement continues to build. Some remain gathered in their backyards while others make their way toward city celebrations, concerts, and fireworks displays. Families carry folding chairs and blankets. Children point toward the lights and attractions ahead. The feeling is unmistakable.
Something special is about to happen. As twilight settles in, conversations quiet and eyes turn toward the sky.
Then it happens. The first firework rises into the darkness.
A brilliant burst of color spreads overhead, followed by the familiar boom that echoes across the city. Another follows, then another. Red, white, blue, gold, and silver light up the night as each explosion draws cheers from the crowd.
Children wave sparklers through the air, tracing their names and imaginary shapes against the darkness. For a little while, it becomes difficult to tell who is enjoying the moment more — the children or the adults. In those moments, everyone seems to become the same age.
Faces glow beneath the fireworks. Strangers smile at one another. Families sit shoulder to shoulder beneath the stars. For a few precious moments, we share something larger than ourselves.
It is a celebration of freedom. A celebration of our nation. A celebration of unity.
For one evening, Americans from every walk of life pause to share the same experience, look toward the same sky, and celebrate the freedoms that bring us together.
As we celebrate America's birthday this year, I hope you enjoy the food, the laughter, the fireworks, and the people who make these moments worth remembering.
Happy Fourth of July.
