An invitation for meaningful dialogue

Each year, the New Mexico Public Education Department releases district report cards as part of its federal reporting responsibility. As Secretary of Education Mariana Padilla recently wrote, these reports are not intended to label schools, but to serve as an invitation for families and communities to engage in meaningful conversations about progress and improvement.

At Las Cruces Public Schools, we welcome that invitation.

Our district’s latest report card, which you can review in this issue of The Las Cruces Bulletin, reflects measurable growth across key indicators, including academic achievement and progress for English learners — areas the state identifies as essential measures of school performance. While no single number tells the whole story of a school or a child, the data shows that focused effort, strong instruction, and strategic investment are producing results for our students.

This progress is the outcome of intentional work we are doing at LCPS. In alignment with priorities outlined by the Public Education Department, LCPS has strengthened structured literacy practices to ensure students build solid reading foundations in the early grades. We have expanded the use of high-quality instructional materials aligned to rigorous standards and invested in professional learning, so teachers have the tools and support needed to deliver effective instruction. We have also prioritized supportive school climates that help students feel safe, seen, and motivated to attend school and thrive.

The impact is encouraging. We are seeing gains in early literacy, and stronger systems of support for multilingual learners. Attendance initiatives and student engagement efforts, like Graduation Alliance as a proven dropout recovery and re-engagement strategy and our renewal of Count Me In, are helping more students stay connected to school. These improvements reflect the dedication of our teachers, principals, instructional coaches, support staff, and — most importantly — our students and families.

The purpose of data is to guide improvement and direct resources where they are most needed. The report card affirms where our efforts are working and provides clarity about where we must continue to accelerate progress.

We recognize that there is still work to do. Sustaining improvement requires persistence, partnership, and a clear focus on student outcomes. LCPS will continue investing in evidence-based instruction, expanding targeted interventions, strengthening career and college readiness pathways, and ensuring that every classroom is equipped with high-quality curriculum and strong instructional support. We are equally committed to creating clear, flexible pathways to graduation for all students — ensuring that every learner, regardless of circumstance, has access to the support, opportunities, and guidance needed to earn a diploma and pursue a successful future.

Public education thrives when it is rooted in strong partnerships. Lasting success depends on families and communities serving as active, engaged partners in the educational journey. We encourage families to review the district report card, explore the data, ask questions, and connect with school leaders about how we can continue strengthening outcomes and building momentum together.

At LCPS, our mission is to be the district where all learners thrive. The growth reflected in this year’s report card demonstrates that when we work closely with our Board of Education, align resources, empower educators, and keep students at the center of every decision, progress follows.

We are proud of the strides our students have made, and we remain committed to ensuring every child in Las Cruces has access to a high-quality education and a future that they choose, instead of one chosen for them. I firmly believe that education is the equalizer for students, and together, we will continue transforming data into action, and action into lasting success for our community’s children.
