Bulldawgs keep winning, chasing repeat

Posted

All eyes throughout the state, not just in southern New Mexico, remain fixed on the Las Cruces High volleyball team. The defending state champion Bulldawgs are out to an 8-0 start this year in non-district contests after running off 27 consecutive wins in 2024. Las Cruces is working on a 38-match winning streak.

The player to watch is senior outside hitter Addison Massey, the MaxPreps New Mexico player of the year last season as a junior. Massey pounded home 516 kills last season, and she is averaging 6.3 kills per set this campaign.

Senior setter Sydney Pipkin has 19 service aces in addition to mastering her role setting table for those Massey spikes. The Dawgs get strong contributions up and down the roster, with senior libero Caleigh Garcia and junior outside hitter Ava Price delivering standout results.

If anyone is going to conquer Las Cruces, it may be Centennial (6-1). Outside hitters Tristan McReynolds and Makena Apodaca lead the Hawks at the net, while libero Sophia Monroy anchors the defense. Head coach Marin Smith is calling on a large group of seniors to keep her team a cohesive unit.

“We have a team with eight seniors on it, which isn’t the usual case, but it brings a lot of experience to our team and leadership,” Smith said. “They are all working together to have a successful last season together which has brought our team closer together as they play for one another that much more.”

Powered by senior Madison Martinez and sophomores Jillian Horton and Megan McDaniel, Mayfield (7-3) might be another surprise challenger.

While its record (3-6) might not be impressive, Organ Mountain believes it will cause the Knights to be overlooked a bit. Led by seniors Maggie Coats and Annabelle Jorgensen, Organ Mountain has weathered some early tests and appears poised to go on a roll.

“I feel that our early pre-season experiences have helped us to become a battle-tested team and as we look ahead to wrapping up pre-district play, I feel confident that this team is going to be a force,” said Organ Mountain head coach Teyna Montoya. “I think that a lot of people wrote us off early when our record didn’t look like other teams in the district, but this team has been great about creating opportunity for themselves and being resilient. I think we are all excited to continue to prove that we should be on people’s minds.”
