Celebrating 10 years of service and regional growth

The South Central Regional Transit District commemorates ten years of providing safe, reliable, and accessible public transportation to communities throughout southern New Mexico.

SCRTD launched service Feb. 22, 2016, beginning with four routes designed to connect residents to essential destinations. Over the past decade, the district has grown into a regional mobility provider operating nine routes across Doña Ana and Sierra Counties, with connections extending into Otero County and El Paso, Texas.

What began as a small but ambitious initiative has evolved into a vital transportation network supporting workforce access, education, healthcare, and economic development throughout the region.

Over the last 10 years, SCRTD has expanded service coverage, strengthened regional partnerships, invested in modern transit facilities, and incorporated zero-emission vehicles into its fleet to support environmental sustainability.

The development of the district’s Mobility & Energy Hub represents a significant milestone in advancing operational efficiency and long-term infrastructure planning.

“Reaching our 10th anniversary reflects the dedication of our employees, the support of our partners, and the trust placed in us by the communities we serve,” said David Armijo, executive director of SCRTD. “Public transportation plays an essential role in connecting people to opportunity. As we look toward the future, we remain committed to expanding access, enhancing reliability, and investing in sustainable mobility solutions for our region.”

Throughout February 2026, SCRTD will host anniversary activities including a formal recognition event, commemorative fleet branding, community outreach efforts, and the release of a 10-Year Impact Report highlighting the district’s growth and fiscal stewardship.

As SCRTD enters its second decade of service, the district remains focused on strengthening regional connectivity and continuing to provide dependable transportation options that improve quality of life for residents across southern New Mexico.
