Celebrating our next generation

Each year, the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico is honored to witness the remarkable determination, resilience, and potential of students across our region. This year, we are proud to celebrate 149 scholarship recipients, and counting, who were awarded more than $166,000 in scholarships to support their educational journeys and future goals.

Behind every scholarship award is a student with a dream. They are future teachers, social workers, nurses, engineers, artists, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and first-generation college graduates working tirelessly to build a better future for themselves, their families, and our communities.

For many students, the cost of college goes far beyond tuition. Scholarships can be the difference between uncertainty and opportunity, helping students stay enrolled, stay focused, and continue building the future they’ve worked so hard for.

These opportunities are only possible because of the generosity and vision of the donors who believe deeply in uplifting the next generation. Through scholarship funds established by individuals, families, businesses, and organizations, donors are making meaningful investments in students and in the future of Southern New Mexico. Their generosity extends far beyond financial support, it sends a powerful message to students that their goals matter, their hard work is seen, and their community believes in them.

For many donors, scholarships are also a way to honor loved ones, celebrate legacies, support specific fields of study, or give back to the communities that helped shape their own lives. Each scholarship is a compassionate commitment to creating opportunities for others.

Rosalba, a recipient of the Alfred P. Corral Scholarship, as scholarship established to support students from Mexico, shared:

“It is an honor for me to be selected as a recipient of the scholarship, and I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. The past year has been incredibly difficult for my family due to my dad's terminal cancer diagnosis, and receiving this scholarship has been such a blessing for myself and for my family. The emotional and financial struggles that the past year has brought have made it difficult to focus on my studies, but your generosity has eased some of that burden and allowed me to continue to pursue my goals which are very important to me. My family and I emigrated from Mexico and moved to the United States when I was three years old. I come from a very hardworking family of farm workers, cleaners, and laborers. It has always been a dream for me to pursue an education and become an example for the future generations of my family. My family's dedication and perseverance have taught me the value of hard work and education. These are values that I hold dearly in every decision that I make about my future and in every action that I take.”

Paloma, a recipient of the Good Sam Wilke Healthcare Scholarship, shares:

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the donor for their generosity in supporting students like me. As a first-generation college student, this scholarship relieves a significant financial burden and allows me to continue pursuing my education without the constant worry of student debt. It also motivates me to one day give back and become a donor myself, helping future generations achieve their dreams. Receiving this scholarship is truly an honor. It reminds me of the journey I have taken and all the experiences that have shaped who I am today.”

Stories like Rosalba’s and Paloma’s remind us that scholarships are about far more than financial assistance. They are about opening doors, creating opportunities, and reminding students that they are not alone in their journey. They represent a community coming together to invest in the success, wellbeing, and future of its young people.

As we celebrate this year’s scholarship recipients, we also celebrate the collective spirit of generosity that continues to transform lives across our region.
