Champions on the state podium

The New Mexico high school state track and field championships concluded May 16 in Albuquerque with Las Cruces area athletes turning in some strong performances:

Senior Miles Odom of Mayfield High set a new state record in winning the pole vault at 16 feet, 7 inches.

Sophomore Daxton Coombs of Organ Mountain won the state championship in the boys 3200 with a 9:30.13. Coombs also finished second in the 800 and 1600.

Las Cruces senior Sofia Herrera won her second straight girls javelin state championship with a toss of 129 feet, 9 inches.

Organ Mountain senior Donnail Escudero finished second in the 400, while senior Xavier Ochoa of Mayfield was third in the boys 300 hurdles and Luke Matherly, a Centennial senior, finished second in discus.

Centennial relay teams finished third in the sprint medley and the 4x800 relay.

The Organ Mountain boys team captured third place in the team competition.
