City promotes new deputy human resources director

The city of Las Cruces recently announced the promotion of Jose Vargas to the position of Deputy Director of Human Resources.

According to a news release, Vargas joined the city in 2019 as a human resources analyst. He was promoted to senior human resources analyst in July 2021 and became human resources manager in December 2022.

“During his tenure, Jose has been instrumental in several significant projects, such as implementing the 48/96 schedule for the Fire Department, implementing a Classification and Compensation Study, reimplementing MUNIS Human Capital Management modules, enhancing NEOGOV functionalities, processing Salary and Benefits Projections and redesigning a new appraisal system,” the news release said. 

“He has also been a key team member in the transition of Human Resource functions, integrating Payroll and Learning and Development programs.”

According to the release, Vargas earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from New Mexico State University. 

“A native New Mexican, Jose enjoys spending time with his family and two dogs when he’s not at work,” the release said.
