Doña Ana County Fire Rescue announced a leadership transition as interim fire chief Andrew Bowen finished his service and Sean Heck was appointed as the next interim fire chief.
Chief Bowen stepped into the interim role during an important transition period for the department, providing steady leadership, continuity and support to firefighters and staff while the county conducted its search for a permanent fire chief. Chief Bowen served as interim for 10 months, following an extension of his original six-month memorandum of understanding with New Mexico State University.
After a comprehensive recruitment process that did not result in the hiring of a permanent fire chief, Doña Ana County and the City of Las Cruces entered into a temporary six-month MOU to support continued leadership at Doña Ana Fire Rescue.
Under the agreement, Sean Heck, who currently serves with the Las Cruces Fire Department, will be temporarily assigned as the interim fire chief for Doña Ana Fire Rescue. This collaborative agreement ensures uninterrupted leadership during this transitional period.
Chief Heck brings extensive fire service experience, operational leadership and a commitment to public safety. His appointment ensures continuity and stability as the county evaluates long-term leadership solutions.
"Interim Chief Bowen did a great job helping us get things moving on the right path, and Interim Chief Heck is already continuing to build on the momentum to ensure the Fire Rescue Department fulfills its mission," assistant county manager Stephen Lopez said. "I am grateful to both of them for all they have done and are doing for our county."
