Dangerbird ride set to bring mountain bike riders to town

Posted

The city’s visitors and convention bureau and the nonprofit Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks are set to welcome mountain bike riders from all over the country this weekend.

The noncompetitive event begins with a “friendly local bike ride,” per a news release, on Thursday, Oct. 24, leaving from Plaza de Las Cruces downtown.

On Friday, a “Bikepack Summit” is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Klein Park, 155 N. Mesquite Street, to “offer riders and members of the public a chance to learn about bikepacking, public lands and the policies that shape outdoor recreation.” Preceding this, outdoor recreation companies will present products and services at Outdoor Adventures, 1424 Missouri Avenue.

Bikers will take to the Monumental Loop, a 250-mile trek through the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, on Saturday, Oct. 26. Approximately 150 riders will depart from Mesilla Plaza at 8 a.m.

“Dangerbird is designed to welcome all types of riders in an inclusive and welcoming space,” the Friends organization stated. “The route highlights the beauty and uniqueness of the national monument and offers riders a one-of-a-kind experience.”

Last year, Pablo Lopez of Outdoor Adventures told the Bulletin that some riders take up to 12 days to complete the entire route, with the average falling four to six days. Some of the bikers pack tents and camping equipment to camp out during the ride (hence, “bikepacking”).
