Electric car sharing program comes to city

Posted

The City of Las Cruces is partnering with El Paso Electric and Forth Mobility to launch a new EV car sharing program this fall.

Drivers will have access to two shared EVs that may be rented for a very affordable $5 per hour or $50 per day, plus tax. The program will be open to anyone 21 or older with a valid driver’s license and clean driving record. The program is a convenient way to try out an EV without having to worry about maintenance, insurance or long-term commitment.
This initiative is part of the Affordable Mobility Platform project, a national effort, partially funding by the U.S. Department of Energy, and managed by Forth Mobility, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the equitable advancement of clean transportation.

Additional funding comes from El Paso Electric’s Transportation Electrification Plan. The AMP project aims to boost access to clean transportation in underserved areas by offering low-cost EVs and charging solutions.
“Reliable transportation opens doors to opportunity whether it’s getting to work, picking up groceries, or visiting friends and family,” said Jennifer Zavon, program manager at Forth. "By expanding our EV carshare to Las Cruces, we’re helping people access the everyday essentials of life while reducing pollution and creating healthier communities.”
EV carsharing helps reduce air pollution and carbon emissions. On-site charging will be available for the program’s EVs along with two public level 2 charging stations for customers with their own EVs.
“El Paso Electric is proud to bring an affordable, short-term electric car rental program to Las Cruces, New Mexico, together with our partners,” said Angie Rodriguez, manager of electrification at EPE. “This program further solidifies our commitment to providing our customers with equitable access to electric transportation and charging infrastructure. For several years, we’ve been supporting our customers with a variety of incentives and flexible rate options to make the switch to electric vehicles easier. We are especially excited about this program as it gives people a first-hand experience with EV to see how simple and convenient clean transportation can be.”
“The City is excited for this opportunity for people to rent an electric vehicle,” said Charlie Mahady, Sustainability Specialist for the City of Las Cruces. “Be it for an errand, an appointment or meeting friends across town, this program will help offer reliable transportation to all in need.
“These electric vehicles will also help improve local air quality by reducing vehicle exhaust.”
The Las Cruces carsharing program will run until the end of 2026.
