Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has appointed former Lincoln County commissioner Rex Wilson to represent Senate District 33, filling the seat left vacant last month by the resignation of Nicholas Paul.
A Republican from Ancho, Wilson served as a Lincoln County commissioner from 1997 to 2003. He is a rancher and former southern region director for Presbyterian Medical Services, where he oversaw programs in Chaves, Lincoln and Otero counties. The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association named Wilson its 2017 Cattleman of the Year.
Wilson also founded Camp Sierra Blanca at Fort Stanton, a nationally recognized alternative education program that gives at-risk youth a second chance through non-traditional learning pathways.
“I extend my gratitude and congratulations to Rex Wilson, who will do a fantastic job serving the people of Senate District 33,” said Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer, R-Farmington. “Rex’s contributions in the Legislature will benefit every New Mexican and he will make a great addition to our New Mexico Senate Republican Caucus. I am pleased that New Mexicans in Senate District 33 will have representation heading in to this upcoming Legislative Session.”
Paul, a Republican from Alamogordo, resigned from the Senate citing health concerns.
Under state law, when a legislative seat becomes vacant, the board of commissioners in each county within the district submits a name to the governor, who must select from the list. Wilson was among eight applicants for the position.
“I am humbled and honored to serve the people of Senate District 33. I look forward to getting meaningful things done for my fellow community members and the citizens of our Great State of New Mexico," Wilson said. "Let’s get to work.”
Senate District 33 encompasses parts of Chaves, Lincoln and Otero counties and is home to approximately 33,750 registered voters .
“I want to congratulate Rex Wilson as he steps into this role to serve the constituents of SD-33 at one of the most critical moments in our states history,” said state Republican Party chairwoman Amy Barela. “Rex will bring valuable insight to the legislature, and his work will have a profound impact on the people in southern New Mexico. He will be a strong addition to our caucus, and I’m thrilled the people of SD-33 now have representation in the upcoming legislative session."
Wilson will serve until a successor is elected in November 2026.
