Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham nominated El Paso Electric Regional Vice President Ricardo Gonzales to fill a four-year term on New Mexico State University’s Board of Regents last week.
The Board of Regents oversees the university's operations and is responsible for university governance. The regents also oversee the president’s office and some university policies and approve all degrees. NMSU’s regents also oversee the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, which is housed at NMSU, a land-grant institution.
“As an Aggie, I’m incredibly proud to have been nominated to the New Mexico State University Board of Regents. As a kid, I remember cruising campus and cheering on the Aggie basketball teams; I could never have imagined an opportunity like this. Thank you, Michelle Lujan Grisham,” Gonzales wrote in a post on LinkedIn.
Gonzales oversees EPE’s operations and strategy in New Mexico. He also leads government relations and lobbying efforts with the state. The privately-owned utility covers much of southern New Mexico.
According to a news release from the governor’s office, Gonzales has been a legislative affairs director for the university and the state Department of Agriculture. His LinkedIn profile reports that he holds a bachelor’s degree in history from NMSU.
“I look forward to working with our new President and the university community as we extend our engagement and impact across the Mesilla Valley, urban and rural New Mexico. Go Aggies,” he stated.
In New Mexico, boards of regents are nominated by the governor and confirmed by the state senate. That confirmation will likely occur during the upcoming legislative session. NMSU regents served staggered 6-year terms.
