“An Afternoon with Soprano Bárbara Padilla” will be presented by New Horizons Symphony (NHS) at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 22, in Atkinson Recital Hall, New Mexico State University Music Building, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces.

The concert is free and open to the public.

NHS Music Director/Conductor Jorge Martinez-Rios will lead the program, as Padilla sings popular favorites, including “Besame Mucho,” “Time to Say Goodbye,” “O Mio Babbino,” “Habanero” from the opera “Carmen,” “Addio” from “Romeo and Juliet” and “Granada,” NHS said in a news release.

NHS will also perform “Radetzky March” by Strauss and “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair.” Borderland Bones Trombone Quartet will also perform. The quartet is comprised of NHS members Lynn Enright, Steve St. John, Greg Taylor and Tom Wildman.

“Padilla is an award-winning soprano who became a household name when she received outstanding reviews for her unforgettable performances on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ achieving first runner-up,” NHS said.

Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Padilla has performed and toured with Grammy Award-winning professionals and was featured soloist for popular Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel.

Padilla is a survivor of stage-four Hodgkin’s disease, NHS said, and regularly speaks and performs at cancer fundraisers.

Padilla has an undergraduate degree from the University of Guadalajara and a master’s degree from the University of Houston Moores School of Music.
