As they prepare for the beginning of district play, all four Las Cruces teams appear to be chasing 9-2 Gadsden in Class 5A District 3, but the gap seems to be smaller than we might have believed. While Gadsden is off to a fast start, Centennial (7-1-1), Organ Mountain (9-2), Mayfield (6-4), and Las Cruces (5-4-1) have also recorded significant non-district wins and carry winning records.
Centennial is getting it done with balance. Senior midfielder Zia Flores leads the team with seven goals, while junior midfielder Clea Coca has delivered six goals and three assists. Senior Amorie Moreno paces the Hawks with five assists and sophomore Emma Ruiz has found the back of the net five times.
At Organ Mountain, junior midfielder Ariyah Vasquez has been the leader at the offensive end with nine goals scored and five assists, as freshman Chloe Robey has dished out five assists for the Knights. Organ Mountain pulled a bit of a surprise to open district play Sept. 23 as it knocked off state-ranked Gadsden 5-2.
Mayfield’s two top scorers are junior Nicole Garza, with nine goals and six assists, and Alexia Lopez with seven goals.
Over at Las Cruces High, Raylene Carillo’s 19 goals are the fourth-best scoring total in the state. She has pounded home more than half of the Bulldawgs’ 29 total tallies. The senior has also handed out four assists, giving here a direct foot in all but six of her team’s goals.
