Some of my earliest memories are from the little kitchen where I grew up. Not the presents under the tree, not the decorations, but the smell of something warm baking in the oven.
Every December, when Christmas approached and the weather turned cold, my mother would prepare the treats that marked the start of the season. That’s when the house changed.
Cinnamon, vanilla, sugar, and warm bread drifted through every room, turning an ordinary day into something magical. We didn’t have much, but somehow, she made Christmas feel full. She used simple ingredients—day-old bread, milk, eggs, sugar, and spices—and turned them into something comforting, something that brought everyone closer.
I didn’t know it then, but those small holiday rituals were the beginning of my love for cooking. Watching her create something meaningful from almost nothing taught me that food carries memory. It carries family. It carries tradition. And most of all, it carries heart.
So, for my first column, I wanted to honor that feeling—the warmth of home, the spirit of Christmas, and the comfort of a dessert that doesn’t need perfection…only love.
This is the recipe that still brings me back to those moments: simple, nostalgic, filled with the flavor of the season, a Christmas bread pudding just like the one that made our house feel warm long before the gifts were opened.
Christmas Cinnamon-Vanilla Bread Pudding
Simple. Warm. Nostalgic. Perfect for the holidays.
Ingredients
• 1 loaf day-old French bread, cubed
• 4 cups whole milk
• 4 large eggs
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
• ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
• 1 tablespoon melted butter
• Zest of 1 orange (optional, but adds Christmas brightness)
• ½ cup dried cranberries or chopped pecans (optional)
For the Warm Vanilla Sauce (optional but perfect for Christmas)
• 1 cup heavy cream
• ½ cup sugar
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• Pinch of cinnamon
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
Butter a 9×13 baking dish.
2. Prepare the bread:
Place cubed bread into the dish. If it’s not dry, place it in the oven for five minutes to lightly crisp.
3. Make the custard:
In a large bowl, whisk milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange zest.
Pour evenly over the bread.
Add cranberries or pecans, if using.
4. Rest:
Let the bread soak for 10–15 minutes so it absorbs the custard.
5. Bake:
Drizzle melted butter over the top.
Bake for 45–55 minutes until lightly golden and set in the center.
6. Make the sauce:
In a saucepan, simmer cream, sugar, and butter for five minutes.
Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla and cinnamon.
7. Serve warm:
Spoon the bread pudding into bowls and drizzle generously with warm vanilla sauce.
