Burrell College and NMOMA host governor’s proclamation ceremony

Posted

The New Mexico Osteopathic Medical Association, in partnership with the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, hosted a special ceremony featuring an official proclamation reading from the New Mexico Governor’s Office declaring December as National Osteopathic Medicine Month.

Physicians, student doctors, community members, and invited local and state officials joined together to recognize the impact of osteopathic medicine in New Mexico and across the nation. The event highlighted the principles of osteopathic medicine, an approach that emphasizes whole-person care, the interconnection of the body’s systems, and the importance of preventive health.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine are fully licensed physicians who practice in every specialty, with a strong commitment to primary care and service in rural and underserved communities.

This celebration came as a new national analysis by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine revealed the significant contributions Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine are making to healthcare access, workforce expansion, and regional economies.

Locally, Burrell College’s impact continues to grow:

  • $20 million in direct payroll

  • $19 million in mission region spending

  • $4.6 million in New Mexico vendor spending

  • $46.9 million in construction spending since its founding

Burrell College is a four-year, private osteopathic, student-centered medical school utilizing the latest medical education technologies and methods to ensure student success in all fields of medicine, from primary care to subspecialties like surgery, anesthesiology, and emergency medicine. Established in 2013, Burrell has two campuses, one in Las Cruces and one in Melbourne, Florida.

NMOMA is the professional body for DOs in New Mexico, serving them since 1959 by advocating for their practice rights, providing essential continuing medical education, fostering professional networking, and educating the public and legislature about the unique, holistic care DOs offer, aiming to expand their impact in the state.
