Lt. Governor Howie Morales joined by the Legislative Finance Committee and officials from Doña Ana County held a ribbon cutting ceremony for upgrades to the Doña Ana County International Jetport in Santa Teresa.
The $20 million project widened and strengthened the runway meaning that larger planes can be used to ship materials to and from southern New Mexico helping the booming industrial park on the border with Mexico.
During the meeting, Morales said that the state “is fortunate for the investments that legislative finance committee has done.
“These are things that we can continue to build on right here in the Borderplex because the governor made it extremely clear that this was an area that we want to invest in so we are going to continue to invest because having those partnerships are going to continue to pay off for us,” Morales said.
Jerry Pacheco, president of the Border Industrial Association, praised this investment and said that this cross-border trade has been a big money maker for the state.
“Our port of entry crossed about $40 billion last year,” Pacheco said. “NMSU and Arrowhead did an economic impact study on industrial bases, and they concluded that we add about $2 billion to the New Mexico economy every year.”
Pacheco said that is larger than the film industry in the state and the industrial park has created about 7,000 jobs.
