The Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office announced Tuesday night that the Absent Voter Election Board had recessed for the night and would reconvene on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 9:30 a.m., in accordance with state election law to resume counting.
The counting of write-in votes for the District 3 Las Cruces city councilor race also continued on Wednesday. As the Bulletin went to press Wednesday at noon, unofficial results indicated that Michael James Harris held a 10-percentage point advantage over Isaiah Paul Tellez in that open District 3 race.
In District 5, incumbent Becky Ann Corran appears to have won re-election as she had 62% of the vote in her race against Ronnie M. Sisneros.
The open District 6 race holds more intrigue. According to statute, with more than three candidates running for that seat, ranked-choice voting comes into play.
According to the county clerk’s office, the tabulations of all rank choice voting races will not be tabulated until all absentee ballots are processed.
The results that appear on the Secretary of State's website are the votes cast for first choice votes only. In that opening round, John P. Munoz had 39% of the vote, followed by Richard J. Reynaud at 28%, Tommy Black at 25%, and Ramona Bataneant at 9%.
Once all absentee votes are added to the tally, the candidate in fourth position will be dropped and second-choice votes will come into play until one candidate has reached more than 50%.
Initiatives
According to unofficial results, the high-profile school bond initiative is passing with 73% of the vote, and the three-mill levy general obligation bond initiative was also passing at 66%.
School board
Incumbents carried the day in unofficial results for the Las Cruces Public School Board elections. Patrick D. Nolan ran unopposed in District 1, board president Pamela M. Cort was running at 59% in District 2, and Robert C. Wofford at 52% in a four-way race in District 3.
