Irene Willey, a lifelong resident of Mesilla Valley New Mexico, passed away peacefully on June 19th in Rockledge, Florida at the age of 93. Following is a memorial statement she wrote 8 years ago.
A wealthy and happy person went to be with her Heavenly Father and join those that predeceased her on June 19, 2026. Her riches were measured not in dollars, but in the minutes, she was blessed to be with her loving family and friends (both two-legged and four-legged)
I was that person, beginning life with my caring and supportive parents, John and Frances Knox, and my sister, Carolyn. In this home I acquired my lifelong love of animals.
I was fortunate to receive a good education and travel throughout much of the world, which confirmed my belief that my beloved Mesilla Valley is the best place to live.
My riches multiplied when God blessed me with my beloved son, Roger Mayfield, and a loving husband, Darrell Willey. Roger enhanced my happiness by finding Susan, my dear daughter-in-law.
Darrell shared with me his daughters Randie Boldra, Trica Hazelton and Jacqui Willey. My life continued to flourish as grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren entered my world.
I spent many precious hours with children whose enthusiasm for learning inspired me to give my best. (Ms. Willey was a professional educator. She taught school at Carl Conlee Elementary and others, served in the Las Cruces School System Administration, and spent the final 15 years of her career as Principal of University Hills Elementary.)
I know I shall meet again with all those whose lives have been a blessing to me.
My bequest to all is to return the love you’ve given to me in such abundance. Continue to share it with others.
Truly, my cup runneth over and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Any donations in my memory should be made to charities benefiting animals.
Irene Willey
As a footnote, the family would like to acknowledge Connie Warren, a dear friend that served as Irene’s caretaker during the last few years. Connie did much to make Irene’s life healthier and happier in her final years.
