Justin Garcia joins Bulletin as news reporter

The Las Cruces Bulletin welcomed experienced reporter Justin Garcia to its news staff last week.

Garcia had previously covered local police, public safety and local government for the Las Cruces Sun-News. At the Bulletin, Garcia will focus on local government reporting as the Bulletin proceeds with plans to incorporate more local reporting into its weekly publication.

“Justin is a solid newsman who shared our vision for the future of the Bulletin,” publisher Belinda Mills commented. “We believe he is a great fit for the team we are building to bring our community the quality local journalism it deserves.”

Garcia is a native New Mexican who has lived and reported in Las Cruces since 2021, when he joined the Sun-News. While there, he won a New Mexico Press Association award for his coverage of the McBride Fire in Ruidoso.

He graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of New Mexico in 2020 and was the editor-in-chief of UNM’s student newspaper, the Daily Lobo, for a year. His first job out of college was as a reporter for the Scottsbluff Star-Herald in Nebraska.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to report news in a community I've come to call home,” Garcia said. “Having lived in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, I can honestly say Las Cruces is my favorite city in New Mexico. It has flaws, many of which I'll be writing about. The weather is too hot for me, and there is no Trader Joe's. But every day, I meet people who inspire me. This town showcases its passionate and caring residents, many of whom sacrificed personal gain to better the community they call home. I want to tell their stories alongside coverage that holds power accountable and reveals the truth."
