Organ Mountain and Las Cruces remained unbeaten Friday night, highlighting a week that saw the city’s four public high school football teams go 2-2 — including one game that became notable for more than the final score.
Organ Mountain rolled past Mayfield 54-15 at the Field of Dreams in a game marred by a second-quarter altercation involving players from both teams. The incident resulted in disciplinary consequences, although details of those penalties were not immediately available.
The Knights did plenty of damage on the field as well, scoring 21 points in the second quarter to take a 28-7 halftime lead before adding 18 more in the third.
Romeo Jones powered the Organ Mountain offense with 244 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries, an average of 16.3 yards per attempt. Quarterback Enrique Ramirez completed 8 of 15 passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns. All four of those touchdown passes went to Zeke Weir, who caught six passes for 164 yards. Organ Mountain finished with 442 yards of offense, including 271 on the ground.
The win moved the Knights to 2-0 and dropped Mayfield to 0-2.
Las Cruces also improved to 2-0, traveling to Texas and returning with a convincing 42-14 victory over Dumas. The Bulldawgs scored 14 points in the opening quarter and led 21-7 at halftime before putting the game away with another 21 points after the break.
Junior quarterback Aldo Gallegos led the way, rushing 18 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns while throwing for 87 yards and another score. Jaxon Alba added 64 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while Chris Gomez rushed for 57 yards and two scores.
The Las Cruces defense recorded seven sacks, with Luis Bojorquez and Denton Walter collecting three apiece. Jeremiah Morales led the Bulldawgs with 14 tackles, while Walter had 13.
Centennial, meanwhile, generated plenty of offense but fell 44-34 at El Paso Andress. The Hawks trailed 30-20 at halftime, pulled within three with the only touchdown of the third quarter, but Andress answered with 14 points in the fourth.
Ruiz Laborin threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 86 yards and another score. Dailen Ramirez ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns, while Gavin Woods caught six passes for 152 yards and two scores. Centennial finished with 448 yards of offense despite falling to 0-2.
This week brings the first traditional rivalry matchup of the season, with unbeaten Las Cruces facing Mayfield on Friday. Centennial hosts Artesia on Thursday, while Organ Mountain faces Alamogordo on Saturday.
