Las Cruces among recipients of $3.4 million police grant

The city of Las Cruces and Las Cruces Police Department are among 10 government agencies or municipalities receiving $3.4 million in federal grants.

The city is set to receive $69,882 from the Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, according to a news release from New Mexico’s congressional delegation. The money is “to enhance community safety by focusing on two critical areas: the well-being of emergency responders and the protection of families residing in high-crime neighborhoods,” the news release said.

“This $3.4 million investment is a critical step towards strengthening public safety in our communities,” U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez, D-N.M., said in the release. “By supporting crime prevention efforts and providing vital resources for survivors, we’re ensuring that justice is within reach. Our law enforcement officers and community organizations work tirelessly to ensure our safety, and I’m committed to fighting for the federal support they need.”

Other recipients included the cities of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Farmington, Clovis and Hobbs, as well as the University of New Mexico, the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Valencia County and the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department.

The Las Cruces Bulletin inquired with the city about specific plans for the grant, but none were provided.

In a written response, a spokesperson told the Bulletin, “I do not have the specifics and am not sure they have been finalized before City Council formally accepts the grant.”
