Las Cruces receives state money for housing projects

Posted

The State of New Mexico announced that it will be giving $120 million dollars to local governments and organizations across the state to help expand affordable housing.

The City of Las Cruces will receive $11,075,000 and the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope will get $100,000 to help with housing projects around the state.

In a statement, Las Cruces Mayor Pro-Tem Johana Bencomo said that “this $11 million investment in affordable housing shows what’s possible when council, staff, community partners, and legislators work together to address the challenges in front of us.”

The City of Las Cruces said that they have identified six projects that could benefit from the funding but since agreements have not been finalized yet, no official plan has been made.

Due to the strict deadline for spending this money, the city said that this money will most likely be used on more “shovel-ready” projects and assist in projects that are already under construction.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement that, “these investments prioritize solving New Mexico’s housing crisis through focused investments in affordable and attainable housing, support for prevention, and proven solutions to the challenge of homelessness.

“When we face a challenge of this magnitude, we must take an ‘all the above’ approach,” Lujan Grisham said.

The funds are expected to help create 1,500 affordable housing units, 1,500 shelter beds, 150 transitional housing units, and help more than 3,500 families statewide according to the press release.

All funds from the state are scheduled to be spent by the end of June in 2026.
