More than 40 candidates from Doña Ana County file for June primary

Posted

Forty-two candidates from Doña Ana County have filed to run in the June 7 Democratic and Republican primaries for state representative; county commission, sheriff, assessor and probate judge; district judge; magistrate judge; and state Public Education Commission (PEC). Filing day was March 8.

There are 24 races on the ballot, with 31 Democratic candidates – including 18 incumbents – and 11 Republicans running.

Democrats filed to run in all the races; Republicans filed in eight races. No Libertarian candidates filed for any office.

Eleven Democrats, including 10 incumbents, have no primary or general election opposition in races for PEC, two seats in the New Mexico House of Representatives, one district court judgeship and seven magistrate judgeships. The winners of the Democratic primaries for another district judgeship on the ballot, county assessor and probate judge also will have no Republican opponents in November.

Candidates (from Las Cruces unless otherwise noted; I: incumbent):

  • State representative:

District 33: Democrats: Micaela Lara Cadena (I), Mesilla; Republicans: none.

District 34: Democrats: Ray Lara (I), Chamberino; Republicans: none.

District 35: Democrats: Angelica Rubio (I); Republicans: Richelle A. Peugh-Swafford.

District 36: Democrats: Nathan Small (I); Republicans: Kimberly A. Skaggs.

District 37: Democrats: Joanne J. Ferrary (I); Republicans: Ronnie M. Sisneros, Rene E. Rodriguez.

District 52: Democrats: Doreen Gallegos (I); Republicans: John Foreman.

District 53: Democrats: Willie Madrid (I), Chaparral; Republicans: Elizabeth L. Winterrowd; Ricky Little (former state representative), Chaparral.

As a result of redistricting, state House District 39 no longer contains a portion of Doña Ana County, and House districts 32 and 38 now include portions of the county. No candidates from Doña Ana County filed in either of those races but voters in the county who live in those districts will vote in those races. Candidates who filed in District 32 are Democrat Candie G. Sweetser (I) and Republican Jenifer Marie Jones, both of Deming. Candidates in District 38 are Democrats Tara Jaramillo and Ravi Bhasker (mayor of Socorro), both of Socorro, and Republicans Sandra Kay Hammack of San Antonio and Melba T. Aguilar of Socorro. Incumbent state Rep. Rebecca Dow, a Republican, is running for governor instead of for re-election to House District 38, and could not have run again for that seat anyway, because the newly redrawn district does not include her address.

There are no state Senate races on the 2022 ballot.

  • State Public Education Commission:

Democrats: Patricia Gipson (I); Republicans: none.

  • Third Judicial District Court judgeships:

Division 2: Democrats: Jessica L. Streeter, Jeanne H. Quintero, Mick I.R. Gutierrez, Robert Lara; Republicans: none. (Judge Marci Beyer, a Democrat, retired last December.)

Division 5: Democrats: Casey B. Fitch (I); Republicans none.

  • Magistrate Court judgeships:

Division 1: Democrats: Samantha Madrid (I); Republicans: none.

Division 2: Democrats: Linda L. Flores (I); Republicans: none.

Division 3: Democrats: Rebecca C. Duffin (I); Republicans: none.

Division 4: Democrats: Bryan Michael Gelecki; Republicans: none. (Incumbent Democrat Norman Osborne did not file for re-election.)

Division 5: Democrats: Kent L. Wingenroth (I); Republicans: none.

Division 6: Democrats: Joel Cano (I); Republicans: none.

Division 7: Democrats: Gian Alexander Rossario (I); Republicans: none.

  • County commission

District 1: Democrats: Lynn Ellins (I); Christopher Schaljo-Hernandez; Emma Johnson Ortiz (former county assessor); Republicans: Janice Marie Williams.

District 3: Democrats: Shannon Reynolds (I); Republicans: Patricia Susan “Susie” Kimble.

  • County sheriff: Democrats: Kim K. Stewart (I); James A. Frietze; Republicans: Byron N. Hollister; Omar Chavez, Santa Teresa.

  • County probate judge: Democrats: Norma L. Torres Roberts, Judith Ann Baca; Republicans: none. (Incumbent Democrat Diana Bustamante is term limited.)

County commission districts 2, 4 and 5, county clerk and treasurer are not on the 2022 ballot.
