NMSU’s Military and Veterans Appreciation Week starts Nov. 7

New Mexico State University will hold the seventh annual Military and Veterans Appreciation Week from Nov. 7-12. This week honors the women and men who have served, past and present, and focuses on supporting NMSU’s military and veteran friendly community.

“The Military and Veterans Appreciation Week is dedicated to honoring students, staff and faculty that have served and sacrificed to protect our freedoms,” said Hector Sanchez, Military and Veterans Programs director. “This year we will highlight the military family and the contributions made to supporting our military and veteran servicemen. In addition, we will also be celebrating 120 years of the ROTC program with ROTC alumni members honored.” 

The week will start with the inaugural ceremony hosted by NMSU at the Aggie Memorial Tower at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7. Army Lt. Col. Adam D. Buchanan, NMSU Army ROTC commander, will be the featured guest speaker. 

Following the ceremony, the Student Veterans Organization will have an information table from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the Corbett Center Student Union main west entrance. 

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, NMSU’s Military and Veterans Program will host the Veteran’s Day picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Garcia Center courtyard. Food will be provided by Jim Bob’s BBQ. Informational tables from various local veteran service organizations will be in attendance, including the Las Cruces Vet Center mobile van. 

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, MVP will host the NMSU Tribute to Military Families and NMSU SVO will also host a Veteran’s Day Carnival. Both events will take place behind the eastside of Young Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, Nov. 9 is ROTC and Armed Forces Recruiters Day. ROTC and Armed Forces recruiters will have information tables from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. outside Young Hall.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, the Military and Veterans Program will host an open house in Corbett Center, Room 244. Members of the NMSU community are invited to stop by and learn about MVP and meet its staff. 

On Veteran’s Day, Friday, Nov. 11, NMSU will host the Faculty and Staff Military Veterans and ROTC Anniversary Banquet in the Doña Ana Community College East Mesa campus Student Resources commons area. The dinner will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Army Col. John M. Ives, Garrison Commander at Fort Huachuca, will be the featured speaker. The dinner is by invitation only. To conclude the week, NMSU Air Force and Army ROTC will take part in the Las Cruces Veterans Day Parade in downtown Las Cruces at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. For more information on the parade, visit http://www.lascrucesvetday.org.

Later that day, NMSU will host a Military Appreciation football game against Lamar University at Aggie Memorial Stadium at 2 p.m. The Student Veterans Organization will be tailgating outside the stadium from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
