“One Flea Spare,” by Naomi Wallace, opens this Friday, June 12, and continues for nine performances through Sunday, June 28, at Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Main St. downtown. The play is directed by Bobbi Masters, assistant professor and production stage manager in the NMSU Theatre Department.
“I have been drawn to ‘One Flea Spare’ for many years,” said Masters, who has a masters of fine arts degree from Southern Illinois University and has directed plays in Las Cruces; El Paso, Dallas and Denton, Texas; Carbondale, Illinois and New York City.
“Wallace wrote the play in 1995 in response to the acquittal of the police officers who brutally beat Rodney King,” Masters said. “Wallace set the play in London during the Great Plague (1665), and the play had a resurgence during the Covid pandemic, inspiring countless Zoom readings, as we all experienced the isolation of quarantine in the midst of social upheaval.”
The cast of “One Flea Spare” is comprised of Kirk Murphy as Snelgrave, Angie Duke as Darcy Snelgrave, Aaron Setliff as Bunce, Rachel Maze as Morse, and Bruce Demaree as Kabe.
“The cast (including many of the same actors from “Endgame,” which Masters directed at Black Box Theatre in 2025) and I had a wonderful time uncovering the many layers of this powerful and deeply moving play. Along the way, we have taken joy in its humanity and humor. I am especially delighted to welcome Angie Duke, who is new to the area, into the Las Cruces theatre community. I am so happy to be surrounded by such talented collaborators, and I cannot wait to share the extraordinary work of the cast and creative team with our community.”
In addition to Masters, the play’s creative team includes scenic designer Eric Cope, lighting designer Aaron Krohn, costume designer Autumn Gieb, props designer Darlene DeMondo, and stage manager Abraham Martinez Alvarado.
The cast and crew include NMSU theatre students and community members.
Performances of “One Flea Spare” are Fridays, June 12, 19 and 26, and Saturdays, June 13, 20 and 27, at 8 p.m.; Sundays, June 21 and 28, at 2:30 p.m.; and Thursday, June 25, at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $18 regular admission, $15 for students and seniors over age 65 and $12 for all seats for the Thursday, June 25, performance.
