Pipelines quietly power New Mexico’s future

Posted

When most people think about New Mexico’s energy future, they picture solar panels stretching across the desert or wind turbines turning against a bright blue sky. And they should. New Mexico has become a national leader, with abundant solar, wind, oil, and natural gas resources helping power homes, businesses, and communities across our state and beyond.

What often gets overlooked is the infrastructure that makes all of that possible. Energy resources matter, but so does the infrastructure that delivers affordable and reliable energy to consumers.

Pipelines are a critical part of New Mexico’s infrastructure network. They safely deliver affordable natural gas to homes and businesses, support local industries, and help keep energy reliable during periods of peak demand.

That matters more than ever right now.

Communities across New Mexico are growing and evolving, creating new opportunities for economic development while increasing the need for reliable and affordable energy. Families, small businesses, manufacturers, and new industries all rely on dependable infrastructure to keep moving forward.

That is true in our largest cities, but it is equally true in rural and tribal communities where reliable infrastructure supports schools, healthcare facilities, agricultural operations, small businesses, and local economic growth.

At the same time, electricity demand is increasing in New Mexico and across the country as manufacturing growth, data centers, and new technologies place additional pressure on the grid. New Mexico’s solar and wind resources will continue to play an important role in our energy future, but we also need the infrastructure and reliable generation resources necessary to keep power flowing when demand spikes or renewable output changes.

Natural gas currently powers about a quarter of New Mexico’s electricity, helping keep energy reliable and affordable across the state. And because New Mexico produces abundant natural gas right here at home, our electricity costs have remained lower than those in many other parts of the country.

For many working families, energy costs hit hard. Reliable infrastructure and affordable natural gas help reduce pressure on electricity prices, especially during the hottest summer months when families are running air conditioning just to stay comfortable and safe.

That infrastructure is also one of the reasons New Mexico has been able to support economic growth while keeping energy affordable. New Mexico is now the nation’s third-largest natural gas producer, and energy production contributes billions of dollars annually that help fund schools, roads, public safety, and other essential services that communities rely on every day.

Our state produces far more natural gas than we consume ourselves, which means New Mexico is helping power communities across the West while supporting jobs and economic opportunity here at home. Pipelines and energy infrastructure are what make that possible.

Modern energy infrastructure has also helped lower emissions by allowing cleaner-burning natural gas to work alongside growing renewable generation. That’s one reason the United States has significantly reduced power-sector emissions over the past two decades.

Beyond energy reliability, infrastructure investment supports real economic opportunity.

Pipelines and related infrastructure projects create construction jobs, support local businesses, generate revenue for schools and communities, and strengthen New Mexico’s long-term economic competitiveness. Across the state, communities benefit when infrastructure investment brings stable employment and new opportunities for local workers and businesses.

In many rural and tribal communities, those investments can provide meaningful opportunities for long-term economic growth while helping communities remain competitive and resilient.

New Mexico does not have to choose between economic growth, environmental progress, and reliable energy. We can continue expanding renewable energy while also investing in the infrastructure needed to support a modern economy and growing communities.

As policymakers continue planning for New Mexico’s energy future, it is important that rural and tribal communities remain part of the conversation. The energy needs of Albuquerque may not always look the same as those of Farmington, Gallup, Shiprock, Dulce, Artesia, or countless other communities across our state, but all of them depend on reliable and affordable energy infrastructure.

Pipelines may not always be visible, but their impact is. Reliable infrastructure helps power homes, support businesses, create jobs, and keep New Mexico communities growing. As our state continues to grow, investing in the infrastructure that supports consumers, communities, and economic opportunity will remain essential to New Mexico’s future.
