Posted

A Las Cruces Police officer was involved in a shooting that occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, in the 900 block of Walnut Street. The shooting resulted in the death of one man and non-life-threatening injuries to another.

Details of what happened have not been released yet by the LCPD, which is investigating the shooting along with the Officer-involved Task Force, according to a news release.

The officer’s identity, nor the identity of the deceased man have not been released by police while the investigation is in its early stages. But the officer will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, while an investigation takes place, according to the news release. The officer was not injured, according to police.

The shooting occurred across the street from Lynne Middle School but did not occur on the campus, according to police. A portion of Walnut Street in front of Lynne Middle School will be closed to traffic for the duration of the on-scene investigation.

During the investigation, Lynn Middle School will have bus and parent drop-off on the northwest side of the school, near the gymnasium, with access from Nevada Avenue.

The Officer-involved Incident Task Force includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police, according to the news release.
