Primary election results set November matchups; sheriff's race remains close

With ballots still being counted Tuesday night, voters across New Mexico selected nominees for November's general election in a series of contested primary races that will shape several races affecting Doña Ana County.

Election officials cautioned that results remained unofficial as of press time, with absentee, provisional and other outstanding ballots still to be processed.

The closest major local contest remained the Democratic primary for Doña Ana County sheriff, where fewer than 600 votes separated the top two candidates Tuesday night.

Governor

Democrats: Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland defeated Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, 72% to 28%.

Republicans: Otero County Sheriff Greggory Hull led a three-way race with 47%, followed by Doug Turner at 37% and Duke Rodriguez at 16%.

November outlook: Haaland and Hull will face each other in the general election.

Lieutenant Governor

Democrats: Maggie Toulouse Oliver defeated Harold Pope, 80% to 20%.

Republicans: David Gallegos won with 50%, followed by Aubrey Dunn at 38% and Manny Lardizabal at 12%.

November outlook: Toulouse Oliver will face Gallegos.

U.S. Senate

Democrats: Incumbent Ben Ray Luján won renomination with 84% over Matt Dodson's 16%.

November outlook: Luján advances to face Republican Larry Marker, who is running as a write-in candidate.

U.S. House District 2

Republicans: Greg Cunningham defeated Jose Orozco, 84% to 16%.

Democrats: Incumbent Gabe Vasquez was unopposed.

November outlook: Vasquez and Cunningham will meet in November in one of New Mexico's most closely watched congressional races.

Secretary of State

Democrats: Amanda Lopez Askin edged Katharine Clark, 53% to 47%.

Republicans: Ramona Goolsby was unopposed.

November outlook: Lopez Askin and Goolsby advance to the general election.

Commissioner of Public Lands

Democrats: Juan de Jesus Sanchez won with 56%, followed by Matthew McQueen at 33% and Jonas Moya at 11%.

Republicans: Michael Perry was unopposed.

November outlook: Sanchez will face Perry.

State House District 33

Democrats: Incumbent Lara Cadena defeated Ramona Martinez, 70% to 30%.

Republicans: Enrique Vigil was unopposed.

November outlook: Cadena and Vigil advance to November.

State House District 34

Democrats: Incumbent Raymundo Lara defeated Juan Fuentes, 78% to 22%.

November outlook: Lara advances to the general election. No Republican primary was contested.

State House District 37

Democrats: Lori Martinez defeated Matilda Villalobos, 60% to 40%.

Republicans: Isabella Solis was unopposed.

November outlook: Martinez and Solis will face each other in November.

Third Judicial District Court

Democrats: Israel Jerabek defeated Dania Gardea, 54% to 46%.

November outlook: Jerabek advances to the general election.

County Commission District 1

Democrats: Daisy Maldonado defeated Angela Garcia, 54% to 46%.

Republicans: Samantha Salopek was unopposed.

November outlook: Maldonado and Salopek will compete in November.

County Sheriff

The most closely watched local race remained unsettled Tuesday night.

With results still unofficial, Vanessa Ordonez led the Democratic field with 37% of the vote, followed by James Frietze with 33%. The margin between the two candidates stood at approximately 569 votes as of Tuesday night.

Other Democratic candidates included Jon Day, Gabriela Lozano, Rafael Reyes, Ricardo Segovia and Eugene Alvarez.

On the Republican side, Todd Garrison won the nomination with 57%, followed by Jamie Quezada at 17%, Byron Hollister at 16% and Gabriel Baisas at 11%.

November outlook: Garrison has secured the Republican nomination. The Democratic nominee will face him in November, though final certification of the primary results is still pending.

County Assessor

Democrats: Eugenia Ortega led with 45%, followed by Ruben Reyes at 29% and Shannon Reynolds at 27%.

November outlook: Ortega advances to the general election pending certification of results.
