Seeking golfers, volunteers for Dress the Child golf tournament

Posted

Dress the Child of Las Cruces is hosting its first ever fundraising golf tournament Friday, May 1, in Las Cruces, and teams of golfers and volunteers for the event are welcome.

Tee off is at 8 a.m., and registration begins at 7 a.m. at the NMSU golf course, 3000 Herb Wimberly Drive. The tournament will end at 2 p.m.

The cost is $500 for a team of four golfers.

Funds raised by the tournament will go to Dress the Child of Las Cruces, a program begun 42 years ago that buys new clothes and shoes for children in need in the Mesilla Valley.

In addition to 18 holes of golf, the tournament will include a hole-in-one contest (the prize is a car donated by the Sisbarro Dealerships); closest-to-the-pin and longest drive contests; and a variety of items in a raffle, including an American flag that has flown with a Holloman Air Force Base pilot in an F16 jet. Lunch will be provided by Lorenzo’s.

"This inaugural golf fundraiser will allow Dress the Child to take 75-100 children who lack adequate clothing shopping for new clothes as they return to school from summer break," said long-time Dress the Child Coordinator Doug Boberg. “Traditionally, shopping events take place during the winter holidays,” he said.

“We are very grateful to have the support of our wonderful sponsors: Nusenda Credit Union (Gold Level), and Bronze Level Sponsors FirstLight Federal Credit Union, Veloz Homes and RBC Cates-Romero team, which makes this event possible," Boberg said.

Members of the NMSU golf team will assist with the tournament.

"I was motivated to further the cause of helping children in our area but did not appreciate how difficult it would be to build a charity golf tournament from scratch,” said tournament director Chris Walker. “But with the tremendous support of our dedicated committee members, and our amazing sponsors and supporters, I'm confident that it will be a great event!"

Dress the Child works with Las Cruces Public Schools and the Gadsden Independent School District to select children to receive the clothes and shoes each year, in partnership with local merchants. Many of the children selected to participate have never had new clothes before. Another major fundraiser, the 35th annual Dress the Child dinner, will be held Sept. 24 at the Las Cruces Convention Center. The theme of this year’s dinner, which will be prepared by outstanding local chefs, is “Havana Nights.”
