Posted

After a tighter-than-expected 5-4 win over 16th-seeded Rio Rancho in the opening one-and-done round of the NMAA 5A softball state tournament, top-seeded Mayfield knocked off Centennial 16-6 to advance in the winner’s bracket. The Trojans face No. 5 Cleveland May 14 at 9:30 a.m.

No. 10 Las Cruces sprung a pair of upsets Friday, defeating seven seed Albuquerque 10-2 to open tournament play before taking down second-seeded Alamogordo 3-1 to stay in the winner’s bracket heading into the second week of championship play. The Bulldawgs next face No. 6 Piedra Vista May 14 at 9:30 a.m.

Third-seeded Organ Mountain and No. 9 Centennial also survived to play in Week 2 after winning tourney openers, but the Knights dropped their second game to Piedra Vista 7-5. The Hawks loss to Mayfield sends Centennial into the elimination bracket at noon May 14 against fourth-seeded Los Lunas, while Organ Mountain is in a must-win situation against No. 2 Alamogordo at noon.

The rest of the tournament is being contested in the Albuquerque area.
