The bizarre fictitious family created by cartoonist Charles Addams delighted New Yorker readers over five decades. They also inspired a television series, movies, toys and other merchandise. They are also the subject of a Broadway musical that debuts soon at New Mexico State University.

“The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy,” with book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, opens with a preview performance Thursday, April 18, and continues for a two-weekend run at the Mark and Stephanie Medoff Theatre in the ASNMSU Center for the Arts, 1000 E. University Ave.

“We have the best talent and the hardest workers in every aspect of this show, ” NMSU theatre professor and show director Lisa Hermanson stated in a news release. “The Addams Family” will be the first musical production under her direction at the university.

“This is a show about family, about love,” Hermanson continued in the release. “Everyone is working so hard. I can’t wait for the community to come and see the show.”

The production, suitable for all ages, is a collaboration among NMSU’s theatre, music, dance and art departments, featuring a portrait of character Morticia Addams painted by a student.

The preview performance will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18. The regular showtimes will be 7:30 p.m. Fridays, April 19 and 26 and Saturdays, April 20 and 27; and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28.

Tickets are $20 general admission, $16 for students, seniors and military and $10 for any under age 18. Tickets for the Thursday, April 18, preview performance only are $10.
