From the May 1, 2015, edition of the Bulletin, tension over county funding took center stage in Las Cruces. A proposed Doña Ana County budget that did not include additional funding requested by the Sheriff’s Department sparked a public dispute, as Sheriff Enrique “Kiki” Vigil and his supporters pushed back against county officials. The disagreement centered on how gross receipts of tax revenue would be allocated, with the department citing needs for pay, equipment and operations.
The debate highlighted ongoing friction between county leadership and law enforcement over priorities and resources.
