Four weeks are in the books. Now the local football schedule is starting to get heavier.

Las Cruces takes its unbeaten record across town for a district matchup with Organ Mountain, while Gadsden puts its own perfect start on the line against Artesia. Centennial looks for a third straight win, Mayfield searches for its first and Mesilla Valley Christian opens the slate Thursday.

Las Cruces (4-0) visits Organ Mountain (3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Field of Dreams, after posting consecutive shutouts over Mayfield, 42-0, and Hobbs, 41-0.

Junior quarterback Aldo Gallegos leads the Bulldogs with 121 rushing yards per game and 10 total touchdowns. Defensively, senior linebacker Denton Walter averages 14 tackles with four sacks, while Luis Bojorquez and Vaughn Romney have combined for 20 quarterback hurries.

Organ Mountain counters with junior running back Romeo Jones, who averages 147.3 rushing yards and has scored nine touchdowns. Senior receiver Zeke Weir adds 92 receiving yards per game and six total scores.

The Knights won their first three games before a 52-28 loss to Eldorado. Alejandro Padilla has 3.5 sacks and averages 8.3 tackles, while Diego Acosta averages 8.7 tackles.

Mayfield (0-4) travels to Chaparral (3-1) for a 7 p.m. district game Friday, bringing the Mayfield head coach Joseph Frias back to the program he led last season. The Trojans remain in search of their first victory after losses to Organ Mountain, Las Cruces and Gadsden. Their offense showed more life against the Panthers, scoring 21 points after being shut out by Las Cruces the previous week.

Centennial (2-2, 1-0 district) heads to Clovis (1-3) at 7 p.m. Friday riding consecutive wins. The Hawks followed a 37-14 victory over Artesia with a 35-7 win over Carlsbad after dropping their first two games. Quarterback Ruiz Laborin has completed 60 percent of his passes with a 96.6 rating through the team’s Sept. 12 statistical update.

Gadsden has yet to slow down. The Panthers improved to 4-0 with a 56-21 win over Mayfield after previously beating Santa Teresa, Capital and Silver.

Sophomore quarterback Rosalio Gomez Jr. has thrown 14 touchdown passes while completing 71 percent of his attempts. Armando Ramirez averages 122.3 rushing yards with seven total touchdowns, Deion Torres has scored eight times and intercepted three passes, and Anthony Palomares has six receiving touchdowns. Gadsden hosts Artesia at 7 p.m. Friday.

Mesilla Valley Christian (2-1) gets the week started fresh off a bye-week against Capitan at 7 p.m. Thursday. The SonBlazers have scored 48 points in each of their victories over Menaul and Maryvale Prep, with a 30-12 loss to Tatum in between. Jaxson Warner averages 169.7 rushing yards and has nine total touchdowns, while quarterback Kobe Redfearn has thrown six touchdown passes.

By the end of Friday night, the local football picture should be considerably clearer.
