Velo Cruces, ‘Every Body Rides with Grace’ host June 4 adaptive cycle parade in Mesilla

“Every Body Rides with Grace” (EBRWG), a program of Velo Cruces, will host an adaptive cycle parade Saturday, June 4, in Mesilla, said EBRWG coordinator Andrea Holguin, the mother of Grace Holguin, for whom the program is named.

Decorations and bike maintenance (provided by the Hub Community Bike Shop) will begin at 8:30 a.m. June 4. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at Parque de Cura Ramon Ortiz across from Mesilla Community Center, 2251 Calle de Santiago, in Mesilla, at 9 a.m., It will follow a one-mile round trip loop through the streets of Mesilla, Holguin said.

In addition to the bicycle maintenance and decoration stations, Kona Ice will be on site to provide refreshments, Holguin said, and there will be a DJ to emcee the event. The Mesilla Marshal's office will lead the parade and will be accompanied by members of the Las Cruces Public Schools’ Safe Routes to Schools program.

The event is free and open to the community, Holguin said.

“Everyone is welcome to walk, ride or roll through the parade route,” she said.

EBRWG works “to provide children with special needs an adaptive cycle so that they can enjoy riding with their friends and families in the community,” Holguin said. “Adaptive cycles are not available locally, and they are very expensive. EBRWG provides financial support and guidance for families looking for the cycle that best fits their child's needs. EBRWG secures funding through grants, crowdfunding and private donations from the community,” Holguin said.

Velo Cruces is a local nonprofit “seeking to make Las Cruces a more bike and pedestrian friendly community.”

“Every Rides with Grace” honors Grace Holguin of Las Cruces, who received an adaptive cycle for her 14th birthday, according to www.velocruces.org/ride-with-grace. Two weeks later, the bike was stolen. “Through the help of a dedicated (police) officer and the support of her community, Grace got her trike back within days. Her parents, Velo Cruces and the State of New Mexico are partnering to pay it forward with the Ride with Grace program.”
