The undefeated and top-seeded Las Cruces High School football team begins pursuit of the state title Friday night after a well-deserved bye week while postseason play began last Friday night.
Mayfield reached the 5A playoffs, but lost 36-22 on the road at Highland, seeing its season come to and end in the first round. In another opening-round contest, Mesilla Valley Christian was a 42-8 winner over Escalante to advance to semifinal-round play in the 8-man football state championships. It earned a date with the 8-man No. 1 seed, Fort Sumner/House Friday night at 7 p.m. at Bernalillo High School.
In the Class 6A bracket, Las Cruces hosts No. 8 Los Lunas, a 28-24 winner over Piedra Vista in the first round. The quarterfinal matchup is set for Friday at 7 p.m. at the Field of Dreams. On Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., it will be Centennial's turn on the turf at the Field of Dreams. The No. 4-seeded Hawks host No. 5 La Cueva in a quarterfinal test. The Bears knocked out Eldorado by a 41-7 count last week.
The postseason continues through the state championship game, which is set for Nov. 29.
