Workshop week is returning to Las Cruces March 16-19, bringing around 20 local artists for two weeks of small, hands-on classes designed to introduce members of the community to new creative skills.
The event, organized by Gabriele Teich and several members of the Ten O’Clock Artists collective, features workshops that range from printmaking and painting to polymer clay jewelry, glass fusing, and dance. Teich will also be leading the soda can earrings workshop March 16 and chine collé printmaking sessions that go from March 17 and 19.
Teich said the idea was initially inspired by a trip to Australia in 2023, where she saw a small town host a similar event that drew visitors from across the region.
“We thought, we should do something like this in Las Cruces,” Teich said. “It’s really an outreach program for the community. It’s not a money maker for anybody.”
Workshops are hosted independently by each artist and typically include three to five participants per session. Most classes range from $20 to $40 and include materials, giving beginners a chance to experiment without having to purchase expensive supplies.
“You get a little glimpse of something,” Teich said. “You come out with a finished product that you made, and then you can decide if you want to pursue it further.”
Last year, coverage of the event helped fill in spots for the class before it began.
“The article came out a week before and then all of a sudden, classes filled up,” Teich said.
This year's lineup includes several new instructors, including a visiting artist from Israel. Several sessions may also take place at the Mesquite Art Gallery, which the Ten O’Clockbegan working last fall.
Teich said the workshops are open to anyone who is interested in trying something new, including beginners and children.
“They will all walk away with a finished piece of their own art,” she said. “At least they had a fun morning and tried something new.”
A full schedule of workshops, times, and dates will be available at workshopslc.art. Participants are encouraged to contact individual artists directly to reserve a spot.
