As another school year comes to a close, I want to thank the students, families, educators, staff and community members who make Las Cruces Public Schools a place where all learners thrive.
The final weeks of school are always filled with celebrations. From commencement, performances, awards ceremonies and competitions, these final moments of reflection make me realize just how much our students have accomplished this year.
It is also an opportunity to look ahead. Across the nation, public school districts are facing a difficult reality: declining enrollment. While this trend is impacting Las Cruces Public Schools, it is not unique to our community. School districts throughout New Mexico are experiencing enrollment shifts tied to changing birth rates, post-pandemic mobility, economic pressures and evolving educational choices for families.
Recently, an article in the Las Cruces Bulletin highlighted an important point that resonates deeply with the work we are doing in LCPS: we must look beyond surface-level enrollment data and better understand the needs, expectations and priorities of our communities. The article emphasized that public education systems cannot simply react to numbers — they must respond thoughtfully, strategically and collaboratively to what families value most.
That is exactly the approach we are taking at LCPS.
Over the past year, our district has worked to right-size our budget while remaining focused on the priorities our community has consistently identified through surveys, public meetings and direct feedback. This work is not easy, but it is necessary to ensure we remain financially responsible while continuing to provide high-quality educational opportunities for students.
What has encouraged me most throughout this process has been the level of community engagement. This year, we saw increased participation in our budget surveys and stronger attendance at our budget town hall meetings. Families, employees, community members and students took the time to ask questions, share concerns, and provide thoughtful feedback about what matters most in our schools.
One recent town hall meeting stood out to me in particular because of the strong student participation. Our students asked insightful questions about school funding, programs, staffing and the future of their schools. They demonstrated curiosity, awareness and a genuine investment in their education. Their voices matter, and I want them to know they are being heard.
The priorities we continue hearing from our community are clear: strong academics, safe schools, student support services, extracurricular opportunities, advocating for modern facilities and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars. Those priorities are guiding our decisions as we plan for the future.
That future includes important investments in our facilities. We continue moving forward with the renovation process at Mayfield High School, a project that represents a major investment in students and the broader community. LCPS is currently working through the funding process with the Public School Facilities Authority, and community input will remain an essential part of that journey. As plans continue to develop, we will provide opportunities for families, staff, and community members to help shape the future of one of our district’s most historic campuses.
Public education works best when communities are informed and engaged. I want to sincerely thank everyone who participated in surveys, attended meetings, shared feedback or simply took the time to ask questions this year. Your involvement strengthens our district and helps ensure our decisions reflect the values and priorities of the community we serve.
As we celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 and prepare for summer, I remain optimistic about the future of Las Cruces Public Schools. Challenges exist, but so do opportunities. By listening to our community, planning responsibly and staying focused on students, we will continue building a district that families are proud to choose.
Thank you for your partnership, your trust and your continued support of public education.
