An Organ Mountain High School freshman was recognized by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Progress Club of Las Cruces after winning first place in the organization’s annual student short story contest.

Kayden Carrillo, a ninth-grade student who enjoys writing, drawing, and making music, earned the top award for his short story, “How Fast Can It Be Taken Away.” Students were invited to submit original stories of up to 2,000 words on a topic of their choice.

Carrillo’s story follows a father raising his daughter when a sudden war breaks out, forcing him to leave home after being drafted into the army. The story centers on the bond between the father and daughter and how quickly life can change.

“I really wanted to show that a person’s life is fragile and there’s so much that can happen in such little time,” Carrillo said.

Carrillo said his interest in writing developed after the COVID-19 pandemic, when he began reading more and drawing inspiration from other artists.

“That’s when I started picking up books and thinking, ‘Wow, this is a really great story, and I want to write something similar, ‘” he said.

Creating characters and imagining the situations they face is what he enjoys most about storytelling.

“I love making up people and making up situations,” Carrillo said.

Linda Gibbons of the GFWC Progress Club of Las Cruces said the contest gives students an opportunity to develop their creative writing skills.

“Promoting literacy and encouraging students to nurture their talents is important,” Gibbons said. “We hope more high schools will promote the contest so we can see even more student involvement.”

Carrillo received a $300 prize and a copy of Stephen King’s book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, during the club’s March 13 meeting at the WIA Building in Las Cruces. Carrillo also read his winning story to members of the organization during the meeting.
