As The Las Cruces Bulletin enters a leadership transition, Alan English has been appointed Interim Publisher, stepping in to guide the newspaper through this next chapter. A seasoned media executive with more than 30 years of experience in community journalism, English will oversee operations starting March 31 while the search for a permanent publisher is conducted.
English takes the reins from Belinda Mills, who has been named chief executive officer of the New Mexico Press Association. Mills has played a crucial role in strengthening The Bulletin and its associated publications as trusted sources of news and community connection.
“We are grateful for Belinda’s leadership and all she has done for The Las Cruces Bulletin,” said Hugh Osteen, Vice President and COO of Osteen Media Group. “Her impact on this newspaper and the Las Cruces community has been invaluable, and we wish her the very best as she takes on this exciting new role.”
Osteen also expressed confidence in English’s ability to lead The Bulletin through this transition.
"Alan brings a wealth of experience in local journalism, business strategy, and community engagement. His leadership will ensure a smooth transition while positioning the organization for continued success,” Osteen said. “We’re excited to have him onboard.”
English has held leadership positions at multiple newspapers across the country, ranging from Louisiana to Massachusetts. In 2017, he accepted a role as Vice President of Communications for the Military Officers Association of America, where he led their national magazine and advocated for the protection of currently serving military members, veterans, their families, and survivors. Most recently, he completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, an experience that reinforced his deep appreciation for small towns and the essential role that local newspapers play in their vitality.
“I’m thrilled to step in as interim publisher at The Las Cruces Bulletin and get to know the people and businesses that make this community unique,” English said. “Local newspapers are the lifeblood of civic engagement and economic vitality, and I look forward to working with the team to ensure we continue delivering impactful journalism while strengthening our ties with readers, businesses, and community leaders.”
During his tenure, English will focus on supporting the staff, driving community engagement, and ensuring the newspaper remains a trusted resource for news and information.
“Whether through digital expansion, deeper business partnerships, or fresh approaches to community storytelling, we’ll work together to ensure The Bulletin continues to thrive,” English said.
Osteen and the leadership team will continue working to identify the best candidate for a permanent publisher, but for now, English is eager to get started and explore how he can best support the newspaper and the Las Cruces community.
A Rich Legacy in Community Journalism
The Las Cruces Bulletin, along with its affiliated specialty publications, has been an award-winning fixture in the New Mexico media landscape. Osteen Media Group acquired The Bulletin in November 2012, continuing a legacy of community-focused journalism. The Bulletin was founded in 1969 by local resident Ken Dahlstrom, and in 2014, it expanded with the acquisition of Desert Exposure, a monthly newspaper serving southern New Mexico since 1996.
"Local newspapers do more than report the news. They build connections, foster discussions, and help communities navigate change. At a time when economic shifts present both challenges and opportunities, The Las Cruces Bulletin will continue to be a trusted source that informs, unites, and advocates for the people it serves. I’m honored to be part of that mission," English said.
