Progress Club hosts a round with a reason

The General Federation of Women’s Club Progress Club of Las Cruces is hosting its 12th annual fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Red Hawk Golf Club, 7502 Red Hawk Golf Road on the East Mesa just north of U.S. Highway 70.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The tournament has a foursome scramble format. The entry fee is $150 per player, which includes a breakfast burrito, green fees, a cart, practice balls, lunch and prizes.

The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 9.

Last year’s tournament raised almost $60,000, and, after paying tournament expenses, more than $50,000 was donated to local nonprofits.

Donations since the tournament began in 2015 have reached the $500,000 mark, Progress Club member and tournament co-chair Lynn Zeemont said. These funds have been dispersed to Rio Grande Honor Flight, Wee Warriors Project, Make-a-Wish New Mexico, veterans’ groups, local schools and libraries, shelters and community outreach and health programs, as well as New Mexico State University and Doña Ana Community College scholarships and other Las Cruces charities, she said.

This year’s tournament includes a hole-in-one contest with a $10,000 prize, a putting contest, longest drive and closest-to-the-hole competitions. There will also be a raffle, a live auction and prizes awarded to the tournament’s first-, second- and third-place winners, she said.

The tournament’s title sponsor is Cavill and Company Investment Managers.

"I have sponsored over a dozen golf tournaments in Las Cruces, and I am most excited about this one because it will be held at Red Hawk and we will be experiencing the fabulous new facilities,” Cavill and Company founder Ron Cavill said. “I am expecting this tournament to be the best one we have done so far, so don't miss out."

Other major sponsors are Viva Toyota, Household Furniture, Metal Craft Company, Dental Associates (Dr. David Sudimack and Eileen Ambriz), and Ikard’s Home Furnishings.

Tournament sponsorships are still available at these levels: hole sponsor: $150; cart sponsor: $1,000; lunch sponsor: $1,000; silver sponsor: $2,000, which includes one free foursome; and gold sponsor: $3,000, which includes two free foursomes.

“True generosity begins by uplifting your own community, sharing your time, resources, and care, to strengthen the place you call home,” Zeemont said. “Our volunteers spend many hours working to raise the funds to do so, and our amazing sponsors’ donations enable us to help as many as we can in our area.”

The GFWC Progress Club was founded in Las Cruces in 1915 and is the largest GFWC club in New Mexico.
