August is National Make a Will Month

Posted

For many people, estate planning feels like something to put off until "someday." Many assume it's only for retirees, those with significant wealth, or people nearing the end of life. However, the truth is that creating a plan for your future is one of the greatest gifts you can give the people you love, no matter what stage of life you’re in.

Estate planning is simply the process of ensuring your wishes are known and your loved ones are cared for while creating an opportunity to support the people, organizations, and community that matter most to you.

Without a plan, families are often left making difficult decisions during already emotional times. Important documents, such as a will, healthcare directives, and financial powers of attorney, can provide clarity and reduce stress to ensure your wishes are honored. These are hard conversations to have, but they are among the most meaningful ones.

August is Make-A-Will Month, a time dedicated to encouraging individuals and families to take the first step toward planning for the future and protecting what matters most. Whether you're creating your first will or revisiting documents you completed years ago, there has never been a better time to start.

At the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, we believe everyone should have access to the tools and resources needed to make informed decisions about their future. Through our partnership with Giving Docs, community members have free access to a secure, user-friendly online platform for creating or updating essential estate planning documents. Resources include wills and trusts, codicils, beneficiary designation assistance, durable powers of attorney, advance healthcare directives, and charitable giving options such as qualified charitable distributions, donor-advised funds, and gifts of appreciated stock.

Estate planning is also about understanding your options. That's why CFSNM is excited to host the 2026 Community Legacy Conference on Friday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This free conference is designed for individuals and families of all ages who want to learn more about planning for the future in a welcoming, educational environment.

Attendees will hear from knowledgeable professionals on topics including estate planning, healthcare and financial powers of attorney, and guidance that helps individuals document their healthcare preferences. The conference will also include a conversation with licensed mental health professional on how to have these conversations with loved ones while expressing their personal, emotional, and spiritual wishes for future care. These conversations can make an incredible difference, helping families navigate difficult moments with greater confidence and peace of mind.

At Your CFSNM, we have the honor to witness firsthand how thoughtful planning creates lasting change. Many of the scholarships awarded to local students, grants supporting nonprofit organizations, and funds responding to community needs exist because someone decided to leave a legacy of generosity. Their foresight continues to strengthen Southern New Mexico for generations, ensuring their values live on through meaningful community impact.

This August, as we recognize Make-A-Will Month, we invite you to take that first step. Attend the Community Legacy Conference, explore the free Giving Docs resources, start a conversation with your family, or simply begin learning more about your options. No matter where you are in life's journey, planning today can provide peace of mind tomorrow for you, your loved ones, and the community you care about.
