Charges filed in Imperial Motel crash

Posted

A 22-year-old man stands charged with vehicular manslaughter after police say he backed an SUV into a motel room on Dec. 6, killing a 55-year-old woman.

Alan Leyva-Vasquez, 22, faces one count of vehicular manslaughter and remains in jail as of this article’s publication. Prosecutors have requested that a judge hold Leyva-Vasquez indefinitely, arguing he’s dangerous and gave contradictory statements to the police.

According to court records, police discovered Leyva-Vasquez at the Imperial Sky Motel with his White 2015 Chevy Suburban lodged in apartment number 111. Court records say that two people were inside, including 55-year-old Kari Scholin, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

An affidavit said Leyva-Vasquez told police armed men were chasing him before he fled to the SUV and intended to pursue a second vehicle. Security cameras show Leyva-Vasquez backing into the building after getting into the SUV.

Court records also said Leyva-Vasquez initially told police he tried to brake, then changed his statement to say he did not apply the brakes.

On Dec. 9, prosecutors filed a motion for pretrial detention. In it, they argue that Leyva-Vasquez's conduct was reckless and indicates he is dangerous and unwilling to follow a court’s orders.

With the motion filing, Leyva-Vasquez will remain in jail until the 3rd Judicial District Court schedules a hearing to determine whether he is dangerous and should be held. That hearing has not been scheduled as of this article's publication.
