Doña Ana fire chief moves on after 32 years

Posted

Doña Ana County Fire Chief Shannon Cherry retired after a 32-year career and has transitioned into a private sector job.

“Chief Cherry had a tremendous impact on Doña Ana County Fire Rescue (DAFR), including securing funding for fire equipment and transport vehicles, the construction of new stations while remodeling older ones, and overseeing the development of a new administrative facility,” the County said in a social media post.

Cherry became DACFR chief in 2021. Before that, he worked in Sandoval County as a deputy chief, assistant chief, firefighter and paramedic. He was also a paramedic in Albuquerque from October 1998 to October 2008,

“Under his tenure, the department began its transition from a majority volunteer-led to career firefighter service, now with over 100 paid staff members,” the County said.

The County also touted Cherry’s role in implementing the Mutual Aid Agreement with the Cities of Sunland Park and Las Cruces, the White Sands /NASA Test Facility, and the Town of Mesilla.

“We wish Chief Cherry the best of luck on all his future endeavors and thank him for his dedicated service to Doña Ana County,” the County said.

But Cherry is not taking a break from one gig to the next.

MES Fire, a fire and law enforcement equipment seller and supplier, announced Cherry would replace Jeff Wood as Apparatus Sales Manager from the company’s Las Cruces facility.

“We are deeply grateful for Jeff’s years of service, his unwavering dedication, and his passion for the fire industry. His legacy of excellence and commitment will continue to inspire us as we move forward,” said John Skaryak, President of the Fire Division, in a news release.

The MES Fire news release said Cherry will oversee all apparatus sales initiatives throughout New Mexico.

“His extensive experience and proven leadership in the fire service aligns seamlessly with our mission to deliver unparalleled service and support to our customers,” the news release said.
