Gloria Gameros looks to become next Doña Ana County Commissioner

Posted

After defeating the incumbent for Doña Ana County’s District 2 commission seat, Gloria Gameros of Anthony has set sights on winning an open contest.

Gameros defeated fellow Democrat Diana Murillo during the June primary, certifying her as the party’s choice to face Republican Lorraine Limon McCullough in the November general election.

The district covers many of the communities south of Las Cruces, including Anthony, Vado, Chamberino, Santa Teresa and Sunland Park.

The winner will join a county commission amid a change in leadership. The last board successfully removed Fernando Macias as county manager and replaced him with Scott Andrews, a public administrator who has led cities in Georgia and California.

Following a reader survey, the Bulletin generated several questions for candidates regarding their background and positions on key topics.

Limon McCullough told the Bulletin she had submitted her answers. Upon review, it emerged Limon McCullough has confused the Las Cruces Bulletin with another local newspaper and had not responded to the Bulletin’s questionnaire. Limon McCullough was granted another opportunity to respond, but did not.

Below are Gameros’ responses.

Please provide relevant experience or background information about yourself that readers should know.

I am a former trustee and mayor pro tem for six years as an elected official with the city of Anthony, New Mexico, from 2016 to 2021. During my tenure, I wrote many policies, resolutions and ordinances for the financial security and internal procedural practices of the city of Anthony, NM. I attended many training sessions in government law and finances every year while I was in office as a trustee.

Why are you running for this position?

I want to represent my district by being present and accessible to everyone. I want to listen to issues affecting any resident or business and find solutions to implement. I want to bring to the rural areas accessible healthcare and infrastructure such as reliable and accessible internet, natural gas, electricity, sewer, and clean water.

What will you do to address homelessness in Doña Ana County?

Homelessness needs to be discussed collectively with all agencies of the state and local from municipalities, county, law enforcement and judicial authorities to create and implement needed solutions and resources to really address homelessness in positive ways for all in Doña Ana and throughout the state.

What will you do to improve the finances of Doña Ana County residents?

Building better infrastructure in Doña Ana is what will help bring in economic development of businesses that pay higher wages that can employ residents and keep our educated youth in the area for further growth in our finances.

What will you do to improve the quality of drinking water for rural water systems in the county?

I will personally visit or be on the boards of the water facilities to learn more about the system, operations and their financials so as to aid these facilities with resources so they can maintain clean water and expansion of lines for the communities in need.

Do you support the board's choice of county manager? Please explain your answer.

I am willing and ready to work with Mr. Andrews when I am elected into office. I am excited to share ideas, issues and working together by creating solutions to move Doña Ana forward and providing our residents with a good quality of life that everyone should have.
