Las Cruces man sentenced for 2022 killing

Posted

A Las Cruces man was sentenced to seven years in prison after a jury convicted him of manslaughter earlier this year.

Jason Salais, 38, had initially been charged with first-degree murder after police said he killed motorcyclist Jose Gomez, 22, in February 2022.

According to court records, police believed that Salais used a truck to ram Gomez near Knox Street and University Avenue on Feb. 26. Court records also noted that Salais told police after the incident that Gomez flashed a pistol at him during the encounter.

Sailas went to trial on May 6, where a jury acquitted him of first-degree murder but found him guilty of the lesser crime of voluntary manslaughter.

Court records show that Conrad Perea handed down a six-year sentence with a one-year enhancement because of past convictions.
