Posted

Las Cruces Police Department have released new details regarding the officer-involved shooting that took place at around 3:40 p.m. Sunday, July 27.

LCPD have identified Dominic Gage Martinez, 21, as the suspect in the incident that took place in the 1900 block of Embassy Drive on Sunday. Police have charged Martinez with a felony count of aggravated assault on a peace officer, misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing and assault on a household member.

When LCPD received the call on Sunday of an alleged domestic incident, the reporting party told dispatch that Martinez was armed with a firearm and threatening to use it, according to the LCPD.

LCPD officers confronted Martinez. One shot was fired by an officer before non-lethal force was used to take Martinez into custody, according to the LCPD.

Las Cruces police will hold a news conference with additional information on this incident at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, in City Council Chambers, 700 N. Main St. The news conference will be also streamed live on the City’s YouTube channel and on LCPD’s Facebook page.

Martinez was transported to a local hospital with non-gunshot, non-life-threatening injuries he obtained while police placed him into custody, the LCPD stated in a news release. He was released shortly thereafter and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.

The officer was not injured, the LCPD said in its news release. The officer is on administrative leave which is standard procedure. The Officer-Involved Task Force, made up of officers from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police, is investigating the officer’s gun discharge.

Embassy Drive near Hoagland Avenue was closed during the police investigation Sunday.
